I wonder about these flashbacks: Are they things that a character (in this case Vandi) is thinking about in the “present”, or simply something that we readers are shown at that moment?
MrCold: Both. :) In most cases it’s just what you readers are being shown at that moment, but in some cases it’s what the character is thinking about right now… for example this flashback or Dores’ first flashback in Chapter 2, where you can see the character starting to contemplate before the flashback begins, and also reacting to what they were thinking about when the flashback ends.
